Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata was an Indian entrepreneur, Shareholder of Tata sons and Chairman of Tata Group. Tata Airlines flew for the first time in 1932 from Karachi to Bombay’s Juhu Aerodrome and Mr. J.R.D Tata himself was the pilot of this first flight which was carry air mail in single-engine de Havilland Puss Moth.
After 6 years of its start, in 1938 Tata airlines started its first domestic flight from Bombay to Trivandrum with a six-seater Miles Merlin. It had its origin as Tata Air services and later renamed as Tata Airlines. Post-Independence In 1953, the Government passed “Air Corporations Act” and purchased a majority stacks in Tata Airlines from its chairman Mr. J.R.D Tata and renamed it as “Air India”. Its Domestic operations were transferred to Indian Airlines. Tata Airlines was converted from a Private airline to a public sector Airlines, However, Mr. J.R.D Tata remain its chairman till 1977.
Post 2004, Air India launched a low-cost subsidiary “Air-India Express” which connect cities in India with the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Air India have its primary hub located at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi and Secondary hub at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai.
Air India flies to total 102 destinations including 57 domestic and 45 international destinations in 31 countries across the globe.

In 2014, Air India became the 27th Member of Star Alliance. Air India have Codeshare Agreement with Air Astana, Air Austral, Air Canada, Air China, Air India Express, Air Mauritius, Air New Zealand, Alliance Air, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Egypt Air, Ethiopian Airlines, EVA Air, Hong Kong Airlines, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, TAP Air Portugal, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines, and United Airlines.
Air India uses Terminal T3 at Indira Gandhi International Airport Delhi. Its Subsidiaries Air India Express and Alliance Air also uses Terminal T3 at Delhi Airport.
Air India have its frequent flyer program called “Flying Returns”. It is shared by Air India and its Subsidiaries like Air India Express and Alliance Air.

Infants travelling in International flights are eligible of 1 piece of 10kg baggage allowance. Cabin Baggage or Hand baggage allowance in Air India all domestic and international flights is max 8kg. Passengers carry more than 8kg can pay extra for excess baggage as per excess baggage charges listed on their website. However, maximum baggage after paying excess baggage charge must not exceed 10kg per person including duty free items.
Maximum Dimensions for hand baggage should not exceed 115cm in all Air India Flights except Alliance air operated flights. Alliance Air Flights maximum allowed dimensions must not exceed in total of 85cms and permitted weight must not exceed 5kg per person.
